Runtime claims usually come from the lowest setting. Real leaf work does not. This calculator sizes the job at working power, then tells you which kit batteries on this site cover it on one charge.

An estimate for planning, not a measurement. The pace numbers are our assumptions. The watt figures come from the two full-power runtimes the makers publish: Greenworks says 20 minutes on high from its 40V 4.0Ah pack, which we count as 160 Wh. EGO says 15 minutes on turbo from its 280 Wh pack.

How the math works

  1. Minutes. We assume you clear about 300 square feet a minute on a hard surface with a light scatter of dry leaves. We slow that down by 1.5 for a moderate load or 2.5 for heavy piles, by 1.5 for lawn, and by 1.5 for wet leaves. These are our planning assumptions. Your pace will differ.
  2. CFM class. Light leaves on a hard surface need very little air. Each step up in leaf load, plus lawn, plus wet, pushes you toward more CFM. Most lawn jobs land in the 400 to 600 CFM class. Heavy or wet lawn jobs land at 600 CFM and up.
  3. Watts. Watt-hours divided by hours gives watts. Greenworks says its 40V 550 CFM blower runs up to 20 minutes on high from its 40V 4.0Ah pack, which is 160 Wh by our math. That is 480 watts, and we use it as working power for the middle class. EGO says its LB7654 runs 15 minutes on turbo from a 280 Wh pack. That is 1,120 watts. We assume you work the big class at about two thirds of that, 750 watts, since nobody holds turbo the whole time. For a light sweeper we assume 200 watts. That last one is our estimate.
  4. Watt-hours. Minutes times watts, divided by 60.

The first job fits any kit here. The second needs about 120 Wh, which the EGO LB6151 (140 Wh), Greenworks 40V 550 (160 Wh) and the larger kits cover. The third needs about 1,175 Wh. That is about 5 charges of the biggest pack here, the 280 Wh battery in the EGO LB7654. A job like that is a reason to mow or rake the bulk first, or to spread the work over several days. No handheld battery blower does it on one charge.
