Wet leaves, gutters and gravel: what a battery blower can do

Yes, a strong battery blower can move wet leaves, but it does it in turbo, and turbo is the mode that empties the battery in minutes. Plan wet jobs around a 600 CFM and up blower, a big pack, and short bursts. For gutters, use a ground-level attachment where one exists rather than a ladder.

Wet and matted leaves

Wet leaves stick to the ground and to each other. Makers point you to turbo for them. EGO's page for the EGO LB7654 describes turbo as the mode for heavy debris including wet leaves, at 765 CFM and up to 200 MPH with the tapered nozzle. The same page gives the cost: 15 minutes on turbo. In our calculator, wet leaves slow your pace by 1.5 and push you up a CFM class. A 5,000 sq ft lawn with heavy wet leaves comes out at about 94 minutes and about 1,175 Wh, which is about 5 charges of the largest pack here.

What helps more than power:

• Wait for a dry afternoon if you can. Dry leaves need a lower setting and far less battery.
• Use the narrow nozzle to lift the edge of a wet mat, then the wide one to move it.
• Rake or mow the thick areas first. Save the blower for beds, edges and hard surfaces.

Light blowers are the wrong tool here. The WORX WG547 lists 75 MPH, and its own listing describes it as a sweeper for dry leaves and debris.

Gutters

EGO sells a gutter attachment kit, the AGC1000. Its page lists it at 8.3 feet long and compatible with several EGO blowers, including the LB6150 and LB7650 tools that are inside the EGO LB6151 and EGO LB7654 kits. It lets you clear a single-story gutter from the ground. A long tube adds leverage on your arms, so the lighter blower is the easier one to hold up.

The reason to care is the ladder. CDC's NIOSH says ladder fall injuries are a persistent hazard at home as well as at work, and that many ladder injuries happen at home. If you must go up, do not carry a running blower on a ladder, and have someone hold it steady. For wet, packed gutter sludge, a blower will not do much from any angle. That is a scoop and hose job.

Gravel, mulch and beds

Here you want less air, not more. A variable trigger or dial lets you lift leaves off gravel or mulch without moving the gravel. The EGO LB6151 dial goes down to 200 CFM, and the Greenworks 40V 550 and Makita XBU03Z have variable triggers with cruise control. The WORX WG547 has two fixed speeds. Wear eye protection around gravel. It bounces.
